Establishing the Green Cleaning Plan – The Green Cleaning Baseline

Green Cleaning Goals

Unless you know where you stand, you cannot see the path to your green cleaning goals. Therefore, you and your green team should establish your green cleaning baseline. In other words, you need to take a look at the current situation in the building. Once you get a grip on the opportunities and challenges which exist in the building, then you can begin outlining your green cleaning plan for improvement.

Identify the State of Things

So that the full scope of the current state of the building can be understood, the green team should conduct several facility and housekeeping surveys. Some of the following points should be considered as you plan your surveys:

ü  Pick items that you can realistically measure. If you were to try to measure air quality, it would be expensive and quite difficult. Don’t bite off too much.

ü  Be sensitive to privacy concerns. Certain data that could be captured such as absenteeism, missed school days or performance data would be fine, things such as specific personnel records is likely to be a problem.

ü  Capture data that is actionable. Don’t collect data just to be collecting as it wastes the green cleaning team’s time. Focus on key measures that you can actually address in your green cleaning plan.

Once the state of the building has been determined, getting the survey in order is the next step in establishing the Green Cleaning Plan. There are many key survey items that should be addressed though you don’t have to do all of them. Focus on the primary factors as determined by the team. Everyone has to be in agreement as to what will be done and the surveys themselves have to be through. Here are a few key points.

Ø  Perform an existing cleaning chemical inventory

Ø  Perform an existing cleaning equipment inventory

Ø  Evaluate janitorial paper and trash can liners

Ø  Evaluate and record any other janitorial tools and supplies

Ø  Conduct an analysis of the janitorial closets and storage areas.

Ø  Conduct a general housekeeping walkthrough

Ø  Document any recycling programs in place

Ø  Read the training manual

Once this has been completed you will be ready to establish the green cleaning plan.
